Italy won the European record of illegal overbulding in 2012, with 161 hectares of land currently converted to new buildings every day (with average of 33 per day in the last 50 years; see other interesting data here). It is a devastating business and a source of major income for mafia.
WWF Italia forecast a land consumption of 75 hectares a day in the next 20 years, and promotes a campaign to “ReUse Italy”, aimed at finding ideas to recovery and convert part of the 230 m2/per capita of urbanised land to sustainable usage. The call for ideas is open until 31 October.
